August Banner

This banner was conceived & executed by artists who wanted to make a monumental fabric installation to be enjoyed by the general public. Installed on 1/2” steel cable from the maintenance sheds on top of two buildings in the heart of downtown Portland, it flew during the month of August.

The poetry, “Georgeous hot. Too wild to heat.”, referring to the hot summer weather was questioned as to whether it was inappropriately suggestive. It wasn’t, of course, but this turned out to be a moot point because the latex paint used for text weakened the fabric “wings” so they were removed within 10 days. Without them, it was smaller but even more pleasing to some.

Ropes attached to each side of the banner & to the side of each building, prevented it from flying up & winding over itself. The force of the wind proved to be so strong that after three & a half weeks, we removed it to prevent the 7” eye bolts securing the ropes from pulling out of the brick buildings.

Sunbow Gallery graciously provided the necessary insurance for this project approved by the City of Portland.
