Magic Carpet Alfombra

Emanuel Children’s Hospital believes that engaging patients & their parents & friends in creative activities heals- helping to stimulate the mind, relieve suffering, improve self-esteem & establish a stronger sense of community. Therefore, this public art project included an Arts-In-Education Residency sponsored by the Regional Arts & Culture Council.

Suzanne guided seven groups of patients & their supporters in the art of collage & pattern. They chose & arranged cut felt elements creating spontaneous, original designs which they then transferred to a felt background. Seven separate panels were combined to make the 70′ fiber mural in a hallway frequented by patients, medical personnel & staff.

This project was suitable for all ages & skill levels. The bright, primary colors are joyful, the material soft & pliable, comforting to the touch. The “artists” were delighted to see similar shapes being arranged in totally different ways & enjoyed being rewarded for their individual expression. Seeing their contributions displayed in the monumental installation was inspiring & instilled a sense of pride. Several commented that while working, they often completely forgot their issues.
