A dramatic focal point & comfortable gathering place, “Give Me Shelter” affords some shade from the hot sun and occasional rains while waiting for transportation. It ties Chabot Community College’s original & newest architecture together in a bold statement suggesting the form of the flat-canopied trees on campus.
The sculpture’s “trunk” recalls the tapered elements on the exterior of Building 700. Its “limbs” hold a glass canopy with glowing cobalt blue images that provide shade & create a magical atmosphere while casting ever-changing shadows.
Mirrored stainless details on the edges of the perforated shade panels bring the sculpture to life, flashing reflected light in a breeze or as a viewer walking or in a passing car changes position. Similar mirrored elements on the “trunk” allow the viewer to see themselves as part of the artwork.
“Give Me Shelter” will be lighted at night for safety and drama. Like Chabot, this sculptural haven welcomes everyone.
