“Ascent” pays homage to learning & the wondrous awakening that is the result of an opened mind.
The University is a home, like a nest, a safe place to discover, to question, to think for oneself while developing the independence to fly alone. The birds, a metaphor for personal growth & transformation, are placed in the dynamic motion of flight to pull the eye upward, suggesting endless possibility.
As an educator, I believe the essence of education is not just to impart information and techniques but to expand awareness on all levels. To open minds & hearts to the fullest, inspiring creativity & personal expression in all areas of life & to develop intelligent, compassionate & truly humane individuals.
This monolithic installation on the exterior wall of Todd Hall has become a symbol of personal excellence & success at Western Oregon University.
