The Arts In Education program is essential in schools that do not have an art curriculum & good for those that do. Tapping into individual expression, developing creativity, learning from mistakes, working together, seeing a final product installed takes concentration, develops discipline & a sense of pride.
I oversaw the creation of dozens of fabric banners (painted, silk-screened or fused appliqué) with K-12 using the same processes. Here are but four class projects, not necessarily the best or most advanced but delightful examples of work done by the youngest students. Kindergarteners made the silk-screened blue & green banner, bringing in real leaves for resists & even learning to tie square knots to secure the acetate leaves.
Fused appliqué banners required the whole class to work together on the design but each student was responsible for developing & executing one aspect of the total composition.
First grade was studying weather, evaporation & the water cycle. Jungle was the topic for second grade & two classes’ interpretations are shown here.
