“Elevator Surrounds” & “Rainbow Sconces”:
Believing that art has the power to heal & give meaning to life, Dorenbecher Children’s Hospital is filled with art. Surrounding the 7th floor public elevators, etched images of Northwest foliage (including bracken, sword & maidenhair ferns, salal, Oregon grape, native blackberry, cedar, & maple) are etched into the elevator surrounds. Iridescent glass butterflies & dragonflies appear to fly across the entrances, & at floor level, a small animal is peaking out waiting to be discovered by a toddler.
Passengers exiting the elevator are greeted by a rainbow of colored light cast by the similarly etched stainless steel sconces on the opposite wall. These installations create a serene yet joyful atmosphere, offering a subliminal message of calm & hope.
Matching surrounds were fabricated for a third elevator that was added to the public elevator lobby years later.
