Santa Rosa Transit Mall

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) provided funding for improved way-finding, streetscape redesign & revitalization of a one-block Transit Mall on Second Street between Santa Rosa Avenue & B Street in downtown Santa Rosa. My proposal addresses various areas including narrative panels in the parking garage, based on local commuting routes that tell the story of the modes of transportation used in Santa Rosa since the Puma Indians paddled the local waterways in reed canoes.

A hexagon is the most efficient use of space & a symbol of high density population. Bees are highly intelligent & work together to survive. We are dependent upon them to pollinate our food & floral crops. Buses going & coming from the center are like bees going & coming to the hive. For these reasons, a honeycomb pattern was chosen- a geometric but organic grid- to undulate over the series of panels & integrate the unique, individual designs proposed for the Mall.

The variety of coordinated motifs and materials provide an inspiring as well as comfortable place to gather, wait and interact.
